SatNav as it should be, fast, accurate and with good set of features,
I have selected Navigon 2 years ago over TomTom and and other brands, and I am very happy about my decision. I had a 2150max model before and it did it’s job pretty well. The only negatives were a) you could not select a route without specifying the route points and b) there was no Off button so if you use it only once in a while the battery is always flat and it takes about 5 minutes to start up.
Now having upgraded to Navigon 40 plus I am very happy that all this has been fixed, and a number of other cool features added.
Overall speed and accuracy improved significantly, due to a better processor and GPS receiver. It starts up very quick and finds GPS satellites in no time. There is now Off button as well, so it keeps the charge when not in use.
My routes is the feature I always wanted, so now I can select the road I want to take rather than being forced to use what I was told.
Lane assistant is handy too, warns you in advance what lane you should be in.
Screen is much brighter now as well, old one was a bit dim in comparison. This looks almost like AMOLED – very bright and crisp even in daylight.
Overall design is much sleeker, with nice metal feature, even the craddle and car charger look fantastic.
For £100 it’s an absolute bargain – if you think Satnavs cost £1000+ just a few years ago and were bulky and unreliable, that’s a massive progress. I am not sure if they can make them any smaller and cheaper from now on, but let’s see.
I would definitely recommend this SatNav if you are undecided which to chose.

|A very worthy competitor to UK mainstream options.,
This is a fantastic bit of kit. My trust in my decision to try something that wasnt mainstream in the UK, but boasted many more features for its price-point paid off.
Although I have to admit, I almost joined the whinging likes of “PMG”‘s review.
It must be my fat fingers, but i had a hell of a time selecting the “Back” function (the [<] button in the bottom-left of the screen), which is a very crucial/essential button to work.
I discovered this only when trying to set the route for my trip through France, Belgium & Luxembourg on the ferry from Dover.
I had the same grief while trying the upper-left “Country” selection button.
My heart started to fade. It was an extremely frustrating first experience.
I was all prepared to go down the “sending it back” route, but hesitated, thinking first i will try to calibrate the screen, the idea being that i suspected the device was excluding too much around the border of the screen.
Anyhow, as i only use the device for overseas trips, it sat on the shelf until tonight.
I got it back out, found the Calibration Settings screen, and was suprised to read “Using your stylus, lightly press on the crosshairs” – HANG ON! I didnt get a stylus with my device!
I grabbed the one out of my eBook Reader and eagerly proceeded with the recalibration.
Afterwards, and with joy, i whizzed around all of the buttons USING THE STYLUS. The difference was absolutely amazing.
I then tried again with my finger, and, well, similar result as before. Grrrr.
So, what this all means is that i will keep a stylus with the kit and use that from now on. Not too much of a problem, as you shouldn’t really use the device while driving (all the big “Route Chosing” buttons work fine with fingers)
A lot of TomTom and Garmin device around the same price DO NOT COME WITH A 4Gb memory capacity (ususally only 2Gb) – so even though they may promise 43 countries, they are NOT ALL HELD ON THE DEVICE. You have to upload them from your PC (while deleting other countries to make space)
This is ridiculous if you want to make a quick unplanned deviation into another country, and well, just cheap on the manufacutures part – memory cost nothing these days.
Regarding Mr PMGs review … People, please “BEWARE” of his inappropriate comments. He rushed in, ignored the initial configuration questions the device asked him to provide and then complains no end that its speaking to him in German.
All he had to do was:
From Chapter 3 of manaul:
“When you switch on the navigation system for the first time, you will be
asked to make the following settings:
- your preferred language for using for the software”
Of course, the gentleman must have rushed through these screens, and left the default, being German of course.
Anyhow, easy to change at anytime:
Options > Settings > General > Page 4/5 > Language (3rd option down) > choose from 27 langs!!!
I suspect its the same with his statement about Tolls – he probably has it configured to “Avoid Toll Routes”. Dummkopf indeed. RTFM.
All in all, i am very happy with the unit.

|Good navigator without customer support,
It is very good navigator if compare with other products.
Initially I have purchased 4310 max and after 1.5 years I have upgraded a software up to 40 plus. Calculation speed is increased which makes it good enough to recalculate the route in case you have missed your turn. It is very much positive moment as on 4310 max it was absolutely unreliable, if you have missed the turn you have to drive at least for about a minute to recalculate the route. Dynamic lane assistant is very good and helpful. It seems that after upgrade I have lost my premium TMC subscription. I have bought it again and since there were no success to receive any traffic information. Do not know how to comment on it yet, probably I have to drive for about 2 hours to receive something. Have not done it yet. TTS is reliable and it works good. There is still too many clicks I need to do to record removed camera or wrong map (I can count it is 6 clicks while you driving!).
The calculation of driving time is absolutely wrong constantly on 33% (the same is for 4310 max). It is looks like developers never taking into account traffic lights and always assume the free road. Even so, it is impossible to drive with this assumptions and not to brake a law. You have to adjust this always. For example if it tells you that you are going to drive 15 minutes you have to adjust it at least for 20 minutes, so in total it is going to be 20 minutes driving time. It is clearly the bug which they do not like to fix!
About customer support.
You can call them to explain your problem and if you like that the problem should be solved you have to be on the line with them and not to hang up, you have to constantly push them. My own experience shows the following: after upgrade my Navigon Fresh software cannot recognize the device any more, given my experience with them I anticipate this. It means that you cannot really buy anything additional to your software. In my case I need to buy speed cameras and Premium TMC. They do not know how to fix this problem, despite the fact I have submitted the request for this. The only way I have found it is to call them and to buy from them directly! And manually ask them, push them, to include the software which I just bought into my account and then I can download it and use it. One more thing this device supports Russian, which is good for Russian, however it is spelling wrong all the mileage during navigation. I have asked them to fix it, 1.5 years ago – there is no improvements!
Overall you get what you have paid for.
I think at that particular case the product is overpriced.
