Best Sat Nav I’ve Owned, 23 July 2010
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 3790T Europe with Premium Traffic and Voice Activation (Electronics)

I was debating whether the voice control was worth the extra £40, but I’m glad I did. It doesn’t need to learn your voice and works brilliantly for me and my wife – although it is vunerable to my 4yr old shouting commands from the back seat.

I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned in other reviews, other than I had to reset the unit to default settings before traffic updates would work. For some reason it didn’t like me activating the unit for the first time in an area without traffic reception, and seemed to confuse it. A quick reset near a major motorway did the trick.

Satellite aquisition is very quick for me – 2-3 seconds, which is in stark contrast to 20 minutes+ for my old unit. It’s tracking me as I creep off my driveway and has loaded traffic data before I reach the end of my road.

A top tip would be to purchase the official friction mount when you buy this unit, it sits on the dashboard without movement or vibration of any kind, and is very quick to remove when you leave the car. It also means the unit is much easier to reach.

Beware software crashes and mapping, 5 Oct 2010

Have used for about a month now. Here are my thoughts in case they are of use to anyone. Would I buy it again? Yes, but I think it needs a software upgrade and better route technology. I hope that’s going to be a free fix from Garmin in the future.

    Pros:
    (1) Product is gorgeous and great in terms of size, weight and being so thin it fits very well in the car, i.e. can go right into the corners of the windscreen out of the way. Mount is also excellent.
    (2) Lane-assist is great
    (3) Screen is fantastic.
    (4) Love the zoom in and zoom out feature. It really allows you to pan out and see where it’s taking you which is quite useful (see cons below).

    Cons:
    (1) Software crashes. Has crashed three times now causing head aches. Once was on the way to catch a plane and I really could have done without it crashing.
    (2) Mapping: crazy routes regularly suggested, e.g.
    (a) When ultimately I need to turn right onto the A4, telling me to go straight on across the lights, go to the next roundabout and make a u-turn so that I can come back and turn left when in fact I can clearly see that there are two lanes of traffic reserved for traffic turning right onto the A4 direct.
    (b) Telling me to turn off the main road into a side street running parallel to the main road, continue for half a mile or so and then rejoin the main road in the direction that I was already travelling. Nuts! It’s done that a few times.
    (3) Satellite acquisition. I was hoping it’d be faster than my old TomTom 910. It isn’t.
    (4) Time to calculate or recalculate a route. Much slower than TomTom.
    (5) Too complicated to add favourites.
    (6) It doesn’t come with a case as standard.

So close to being perfect!, 8 Feb 2011

This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 3790T Europe with Premium Traffic and Voice Activation (Electronics)

I decided to go back to the dark side and purchased the Garmin nuvi 3790T after several major arguments with my TomTom Go which nearly resulted in divorce and a near fatal collision. As with all the other reviews, the device is beautiful and all other Sat Navs should follow this route in terms of design, esp. the touch screen which after using the Tom for a couple of years , is pleasure to touch. The short review – Great design, Voice command Great when it works (70% hit rate), maps A+. Just missing a few bits, which is a shame for the price you pay.

    Detailed review.
Packaging and Delivery: (Not Garmins Fault) – Item was given to my neighbour as I was out (Couriers should only ever do this if it’s been agreed with you) £250 item being given to somebody I don’t know, not happy. Box, was open, was that my neighbour? or packaging? I won’t ever know. Arrived in good time.
Inside the Box: I noticed a few reviews talking about the wrong charger for the car. They were wrong. The charger is correct, it fits into the bracket, not the unit. For the price Garmin should of thrown in a case. Rubbish dash board mount lasted 10 minutes before failing. Micro Mini USB cable to connect unit to PC.
Turning On: I downloaded all the new maps and updates, took about 3 hours in total and that’s with a very good internet connection. Download was simple and easy to follow and clearly tells you that with this model, you must turn the device off after download rather than waiting for the reboot.
Voice Command/phone: When this works, it’s fantastic. I have a hit rate of about 70% when driving. Once you’re in, it seems to work 99%, it’s just getting the VC turned on that can be a little tricky. Downloaded all my Iphone4 contacts with ease. When you ask it to call a contact for example `Steve’ it will list all the numbers for Steve, Mobile, home or work and you select 1, 2 or 3 – Sound quality is good, but the volume is set at the volume for the maps, so you have to turn the units volume to at least 70% before calling which is a pain. It should have 2 volume settings, calls and maps.
Map View: This is why I changed from TomTom to GARMIN. The Garmin view is so much better than TT, one touch on the screen and you get to see a bird’s eye view of where you currently are, unlike the TT that took at least 4 screen touches and then trouble zooming in to do the same. The lane assist is great, albeit it pops up a little too early before the junction, but better early than late. The automatic zooming is awesome, gives you just the right amount of data you need when driving, zooms in when slowing down and out again when speeding up so you can see the area around you while maintaining focus on the road that you are travelling on. 3D Terrain is very good although not much use in East Anglia but it did show me a 3D image of Ely cathedral as I drove past. The dual-orientations is very good, I’m not sure which I prefer, both do a great job. MAP DATA is a small issue, the standard function is to show 2 boxes, arrival and Speed. I like to know arrival, speed, miles etc. You can add these but this moves the boxes to the right hand screen which in turn reduces the map size by about 30%, they should of allowed these boxes to remain on the bottom with the other two. Overall the map screens are excellent, could be improved a little but so much better to use than my previous TT.
Touch Screen: Excellent, zooming in and out is easy, two swipes and the map will turn it around, double tap and will zoom in. The touch buttons on the main menus are also very easy to use although swiping down like an Iphone is not as smooth but getting there, well done Garmin!
Safety Cameras: Oh dear, TomTom win hands down here. Garmin have these silly text like messages appear on the map when in range but they don’t show you where on the map the fixed unit is, just states fixed unit. TT would show me a camera on the map so I could see the exact location of the camera, with Garmin, I’m having to slow down until the message disappears (I know I shouldn’t be speeding) as I have no idea if the camera is on my side or the other. I like that it warns me of potential hot spots for mobile cameras but I don’t like the text message appearing all over the map as it may cover part of your route and won’t go away until you are out of that area. They should copy TT and just show a little camera next to the road you are on – Overall I’m disappointed with the safety camera function, but it works so shouldn’t get any fines.
Where too: Garmin missed a trick with this function. Unlike TT and Navman, when you enter in your location destination in the `Where too’ the unit just starts, it doesn’t give you the option to view the entire route first and to suggest a different route like the other brands do. Navman give 3 options and I think the new TT also does the same. Such a shame as you should at least see which route the unit wants to take…
